Here are some awesome numbers on Sri Lanka’s Online population. According to Telecom Regulatory Commission of Sri Lanka AKA TRC by Mid-Year 2016 Online users count is 6,087,164 among the total population of 21,203,000. Which is 28.7% Online Penetration (Some stats are there online says this is 29.3% considering the population is 20,810,816)
Online users in the world is 3,424,971,237 which sets Sri Lanka at 0.2% in Contribution
MOBILE SUBSCRIPTIONS IN SRI LANKA
Though the Population is 21,203,000 Number of Cellular Mobile Telephone Subscriptions is 25,869,563, which shows the penetration of 122%. The number of mobile broadband connections has doubled each year since their introduction in the year 2009, registering an average growth of nearly 96.5% during the past six years. The fixed internet connections too have registered a praiseworthy growth of 68% although it hasn’t seen as rapid growth as mobile BB connections have.
SOCIAL MEDIA USERS IN SRI LANKA
Facebook in Sri Lanka now reaches the same or more people than Popular TV Channels. Facebook monthly active users are 4.5 – 5 million. TV Channels reaches to abut 4.2 – 5.2 million people according to LMRB data.

- Colombo – 2.5 – 3 Million
- Kandy – 150K – 200K
- Kurunegala – 80K – 90K
- Galle – 80K – 90K
- Ratnapura – 30K – 35K
Top Interests are Technology, Entertainment, Shopping & Fashion, Online Shopping
About 73% of the users are accessing Facebook only from their mobile while 18% use multiple devices (Desktop/Mobile) to access Facebook in Sri Lanka. There is about 30% user growth during last year and the main reason can be the viral topics surfaced during the particular period and the Traditional media talking about it frequently.

OTHER SOCIAL MEDIA PLATFORMS
Instagram is becoming very popular among the youth and the number of users were doubled during last year (2016) after it was acquired by Facebook. In 2016 there were about 560,000 Insta people in Sri Lanka
Even though Twitter growing slowing in Sri Lanka we have more than 1 million twitter accounts in Sri Lanka, actual number of active users are around 180,000 currently. These users are very active considering other social platforms
Mostly users consider LinkedIn as a professional networking and carrier opportunities platform. In 2016 there were 780,000 LinkedIn users in Sri Lanka.

So it’s time to go for DIGITAL FIRST CAMPAIGNS rather than only traditional media. Brands can reach the target audiences in an efficient and cost effective media and the results can be analyzed on the go since the digital advertising platforms are pretty transparent.
In 2017 these numbers will be much higher and advertising budgets to be allocated considering the potential online users & Trends. Also when I comes to content marketing endorsed or not endorsed Videos, Pictures, Articles etc will surface on digital space and the most interactive contents will get the reach & shared.
